Repost: the paper is out now! Read it here at Scientific Reports: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-55038-5 We describe a new bonebed of avimimids from China, and did some histological analysis to see the process of tibiotarsal fusion. We were quite surprised when two specimens of similar size but with different degrees of tibiotarsal fusion were completely different ages. It’s a small sample but it suggests that fusion began quite early in life, and that avimimids grew more like birds (rapidly for a short period) than like other small dinosaurs (slower growth rates over longer periods). #wildlifewednesday: #Australia is best known for its unusual #marsupial fauna, unlike any other continent on earth. #koala #kangaroo #wombat #wallaby #wildlife #wildlifephotography #naturephotography
“When I gwow up, I want to be a paleontologist” - Me at age 4, probably
#wildlifewednesday: More from Australia — Reptiles! Unlike many modern ecosystems, Australasia lacks any truly large mammalian predators, so reptiles have filled that role instead. Today: an emerald tree boa; a Green Sea Turtle (not named for its colour), a Saltwater Crocodile; and the Komodo Dragon. #reptiles #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #snakes #lizards #crocodile #seaturtle
I saw lots of wildlife in #Australia, so I’ll be doing #wildlifewednesday over the next few weeks. Today, a sample of the birds: A blue-and-yellow macaw (endemic to South America rather than Australia), a Cassowary (the deadliest birb on earth), a satin flycatcher in his nest, and a rose-ringed parakeet (native to Africa and India). #birds #birdphotography #wildlife #nature #naturephotography #dinosaur
Loved #Australia! Amazing wildlife, here are a few highlights. Look for much more coming soon! Apparently it’s not posting the photos properly, can’t seem to figure out why. :( #birds #birdsofaustralia #komododragon #wildlifephotography #wildlife #bats
